CHAPTER ELEVEN

The girls had arrived and things at the stables slipped into their usual routine. The last of the first ride of the day was leaving the yard when Adam’s bike could be heard coming up the lane. She left what she was doing and hurried out to meet him as he dismounted.

“Well what did they say? Are they coming out to arrest him?”

“Take it easy. How’s Freddy?”

“Asleep.”

“He’s to go voluntarily to the station and tell them all he knows about these friends of his and how he became involved with them. Otherwise they will arrest him anyway. He has until lunch time.”

They had entered the kitchen and Thea went automatically to brew the tea. “What if he refuses to talk to them? I’ve never seen him behave like he did last night. That wasn’t the Freddy I brought up.”

“Drugs do that to people Thea even the mildest drugs can change a person’s character. In situations where a young mind is being stretched and tried drugs can appear an accepted extension of all things new.”

“Only if you are as stupid as I am,” a weary voice spoke from the half open door.

Both adults turned in surprise as a rough looking Freddy wandered into the kitchen. He dropped down into the nearest chair and flung his arms across the table. “I feel lousy, what did that old bugger hit me with?”

“Horse tablets,” Thea said, handing tea to Adam and her own to Freddy. As she went to pour a third cup for herself Billy sauntered in.

“You’re up then,” he said to Freddy. “What’s happening?” he turned to Adam. Adam repeated what he had told Thea and Billy nodded. “You know what you have to do then,” he said to his son.

Freddy dropped his head into his hands and rubbed his forehead.

“Fred?”

Freddy’s head bobbed up and down in response though he didn’t look up.

Satisfied Billy took a couple of cans from the fridge and left the room.

“When you’ve washed and dressed and had something to eat Adam will take you in.” She looked to Adam for confirmation and received a brisk nod.

With a long drawn out sigh Freddy got up from the table and taking his cup with him went off up stairs. They left an hour later and Thea returned to the stables knowing that hard work was the only release she could give herself from the gnawing anxiety of what was happening at the police station. If only she could have gone with him but she knew that he would never have allowed that. The next best thing was the knowledge that Adam was with him.

Adam returned to Mrs Taylor’s after depositing Freddy back home. It had been a long wait at the police station and for a while he feared that they would arrest the lad. He took his jacket off and threw it over the back of the chair. He had an hour before he would have to collect Beth from school.

Things were moving too fast he admitted to himself as he put on the percolator for a cup of coffee.
